Leaving your car on a parking lot Off-Island.

Tip: If you are driving from NY CT or West of MA drive to New Bedford, leave your car there and take SeaStreak (New England Fast Ferry) ferry to Martha's Vineyard, you will save a bunch of time and avoid Cape traffic.

There are several long-term parking lots in Woods Hole/Falmouth where you can leave your car and go to Martha's Vineyard without it. Pros: low ferry cost, no reservation hassle. Cons: taking a shuttle bus (free) to the ferry carrying your luggage, high car rental cost, taking taxis or public transportation.

Bringing your car over to Martha's Vineyard.

The only option to bring your car over to the Island would be from Woods Hole on Cape Cod with Steamship Authority Ferry. It's a 45-minute trip to Vineyard Haven (year-round) or a 50-minute trip to Oak Bluffs (May - October)
  • Reservation: You positively need to make a reservation for your car, prices vary depending on length: Under 17' around $135 round trip (high-season April-October), $85 round trip (off-season November-March). You have to check in at least 30-40 minutes before your scheduled departure.
In addition to car reservation you will need to purchase tickets for each passenger - about $16.00 (round trip), Child under 5 y.o. Free.
  • Standby: If you missed your boat or didn't make a reservation, your car will be placed in a waiting line (if standby is allowed on that day), this can take hours. On standby allowed days Steamship Authority guarantees your passage if you're placed in line before 2pm.

  • Tip: Try avoiding I-95 on holidays like July 4-th, you might get into traffic. Don't be late for your ferry, instead plan ahead and add 2-3 hours to your trip - this way if you arrive earlier you will have some extra time you can walk around Woods Hole.
  • Tip: If your ferry reservation is early in the morning, you can drive a night before and stay overnight in Bourne or Falmouth in a hotel/motel, this way you are only 15-30 minutes away from Woods Hole Steamship Authority.
  • Recommended places to stay overnight: Best Western (by Bourne Bridge)
